The letter, signed on May 10 and signed, among others, by representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, assures that “it is already giving tangible results” which they describe as a “new approach” towards Venezuela, when referring to the visit they made to Caracas White House adviser Juan González and Ambassador James Story.

“We urge you to continue the dialogue with the Venezuelan government and, in support of that process, consider lifting broad economic sanctions that have achieved little more than the widespread suffering of the Venezuelan people,” the congressmen asked, according to what was published. through the We Monitor portal.

In the letter they affirm that “the policies applied under the Trump administration not only failed to improve the situation in Venezuela, they significantly exacerbated it” and “served to deepen the political crisis, strengthen the hand of the Maduro government and undermine the credibility of the United States. , leaving everyday Venezuelans to bear the terrible human costs.”

In their letter, the congressmen quote the former governor of Miranda, Henrique Capriles Radonski, to maintain that “key figures of the Venezuelan opposition” have also spoken out against the sanctions.

Finally, they consider that “the relaxation of the sanctions would mark a critical step forward in the process of compromise and diplomacy that his administration has initiated and could contribute to the resolution of the political crisis and improve the well-being of the Venezuelan people.”
