France Protests: Nearly 1,000 Arrested Amid Violent Clashes Over Living Costs

Nearly 1,000 people have been arrested across France following violent clashes between riot police and demonstrators protesting poor economic conditions and the high cost of living. The unrest struck cities including Paris and Marseilles, drawing thousands into the streets as public anger over inflation and declining public services boiled over into widespread disorder.

Arrests and Property Damage Across French Cities

The demonstrations turned destructive in several urban centers as splinter groups targeted public buildings and commercial districts. In Limoges, the city hall was set ablaze, while in Marseille, black-clad protesters forced entry into City Hall and defaced the structure with anarchic graffiti. Protest crowds in Lyon also set fire to the city’s tourist office.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated that approximately 400 individuals had been detained following the initial violent incidents, with total arrests eventually approaching the 1,000 mark nationwide. Official estimates placed total turnout at roughly 550,000 demonstrators, whereas the CGT union calculated participation at 800,000.

In central Paris, riot police deployed tear gas rounds against crowds of mostly young participants wearing hoodies, masks, and protective goggles. Rioters attempted to force entry into the Galeries Lafayette department store, smashed banking facilities, ransacked a Lacoste boutique, and looted an SFR mobile phone shop, while numerous vehicles were set ablaze throughout the day.

Government Response and Political Reactions

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu declared that the administration would not be intimidated by the violence, attributing the unrest to the far-left and criminal elements operating months ahead of the upcoming presidential election. Writing on X, Prime Minister Lecornu stated that no faction would be permitted to impose a political agenda through destructive acts.

President Emmanuel Macron similarly condemned the perpetrators, vowing that authorities would prosecute and punish those responsible for the attacks. In a post on X, President Macron emphasized national unity against individuals seeking to undermine institutional stability and disrupt citizens attempting to express grievances peacefully.

Participants maintained that the majority of marchers remained peaceful, attributing property damage to isolated agitators. Lola, a 19-year-old demonstrator in Paris, described the motivations behind the mobilization, stating, We are fighting because the cost of living is too harsh, because the price of fuel is too high, because high school pupils are being violently attacked and hurt all over the country just for trying to protest and ask for more teachers and decent learning conditions.

Spillover Unrest Across Europe

The economic strain generated parallel demonstrations in neighboring European nations. In Belgium, hundreds of mostly young protesters gathered in Brussels, where some clashed with police amid student opposition to rising education costs and proposed reforms.
