It’s a story that begins a little like a Dreamworks animated movie. “I dreamed of being an actress”confides Léana Montana. “But when I said that at five years old, people laughed.” More than fifteen years later, here is this young 22-year-old Moselle starring in one of the blockbusters of the year. The dubber, who grew up in Stiring-Wendel, lends her voice to the young Ruby in the animated film “Ruby, l’ado Kraken”, the latest major production from the Dreamworks studio, released in French theaters on June 28.

It all started when he was eight years old, when his mother decided to enroll him in the Jacques-Ropital theater school in Forbach, to overcome his shyness. For the girl, it’s a revelation. Léana Montana continues with the conservatory of Sarreguemines, from the third to the final. She then moved to Paris in 2019. “I really started from zero, I had no contact in Paris”she recalls. “I had to learn on the job how to register for castings, how to contact artistic directors, etc.”

“I’m a huge Shrek fan”

For a year, the young Mosellan chained small roles in series and first experiences of dubbing. One day, she receives a call from an artistic director, who offers him to play the leading role in an animated film, without further details due to confidentiality. A few weeks later, she learns that she will work for the Dreamworks studio. “I was really too happy”says Léana Montana. “I grew up with Dreamworks, I’m a huge Shrek fan.”

“When I say to myself that I doubled the main role of a film where it is literally written on the poster that it is made by the creators of Shrek, it is incredible”, continues the young woman. “And above all, I am very happy to make the little Léana proud that I was, a fan of all these animated films.”

Become the “spokesperson” of the character

Léana Montana therefore had to slip into the skin of Ruby, a teenager who discovers the powers of a giant octopus, a Kraken, which she must try to master to overcome the evil characters that are the sirens. “To find this voice, I calibrated myself to the character”she says. “It’s very instinctive. As she’s a younger teenager than me, naturally I took her in a little higher tones, with a little awkward voice.”

“In the end, it comes almost naturally, even with the body. When you’re behind the bar in a dubbing session, you look a bit at what the character does in terms of movements, expressions”explains the Mosellane. “And then, I identified with the character a little, drawing mainly on my experiences as a teenager. Ruby is someone who tries to find her place, sometimes she takes up a lot of space in spite of herself.”

“I really like this theme, because during my childhood and my adolescence, I sometimes had the feeling of taking up space, or that I was not completely accepted with all the facets of my personality”, she confides. “So it’s all the more satisfying to embody a character you feel close to. In fact, I almost want to be his spokesperson!”

“Suddenly you hear your voice on the big screen”

On June 28, the day the film was released, she was obviously at the cinemawith all his friends. “Suddenly you hear your voice on the big screen”she shuddered once more. “And I see people in the room that I don’t know listening to what I’ve done. It’s quite intimidating but it’s still incredible, “ describes the Moselle actress, who also wishes to recall attachment to one’s roots : “I’m so proud to have represented Stiring-Wendel on this scale!”

Léana Montana is already working on future dubbing projects, notably for a feature film and a video game. For the moment, she has no right to say more…
