Highway bridge collapses in China due to flooding caused by rain

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A highway bridge in northern China collapsed due to flash floods triggered by heavy rains, and two cars plunged into the river, state media reported Thursday.

It was unknown if there were any fatalities following the Harbin-Mudanjiang expressway bridge collapsed in Heilongjiang province, the Beijing News reported.

The infrastructure collapsed around 8:50 a.m. Thursday, traffic authorities said.

A rescue mission was underway and a section of the highway was cut off, state media reported.

China is suffering from floods caused by heavy downpours in various parts of the country. The weather agency said the capital Beijing recorded its record rainfall in at least 140 years in recent days due to the remnants of Typhoon Doksuri,
