(Ecofin Agency) – Frequency management at borders still remains problematic in Africa. At the beginning of 2022, the issue was the subject of a tripartite meeting between Mauritania, Senegal and Mali.
Senegal and Mauritania have committed to collaborating on the coordination and sharing of telecom frequencies, as well as on the management of interference and involuntary roaming at their borders over the next three years. This is part of the clauses of a cooperation protocol signed last week between the Telecommunications and Postal Regulatory Authority of Senegal (ARTP) and the Regulatory Authority of Mauritania (ARE).
The strengthened collaboration between the two parties should also cover the regulation of the electronic and postal communications markets; sharing experiences and regulatory tools; promoting technological innovation and digital transformation…
This memorandum of understanding was signed on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the border coordination and frequency sharing meeting between Mauritania and Senegal, which was held in Nouakchott from Wednesday November 1 to Friday November 3. . According to Abdou Karim Sall (photo, left), general director of ARTP, this meeting is necessary in order to resolve the “practical problems” which remain despite the spectrum management and control systems of Senegal and Mauritania. The same issue was at the heart of the debates during the last tripartite frequency coordination meeting between Mali, Mauritania and Senegal in Nouakchott in early 2022.
Joint teams made up of technicians from regulators and operators from the two countries will travel across border areas in the coming weeks to verify and note the effectiveness of the decisions and recommendations resulting from the Nouakchott meeting. Better coordination of frequencies at borders should make it possible to improve the quality of mobile telephone services in both Mauritania and Senegal.
