Toxic Haze Blankets Southeast Asia as Indonesian Wildfires Scorch 107,000 Hectares
A choking, amber shroud of toxic smoke has crossed international borders, enveloping parts of Malaysia as aggressive wildfires ravage vast peatlands and forests across Indonesia. Driven by a prolonged dry season and an intensifying El Niño climate pattern, the blazes have already scorched more than 107,000 hectares nationwide, according to regional disaster authorities.
For millions living across Southeast Asia, the crisis has once again brought familiar misery.
Peatland Vulnerabilities and the ‘Godzilla’ El Niño
Indonesian authorities are concentrating their firefighting efforts on six priority provinces: Jambi, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and Riau. These regions contain expansive areas of carbon-rich peatland that become highly volatile and vulnerable to fire during the annual dry season.
Compounding the local environmental strain, this year’s dry season is significantly harsher, fueled by a more intense El Niño climate event that some have nicknamed the “Godzilla” El Niño. As water sources dwindle in affected pockets, local containment efforts face severe logistical hurdles.
“The smoke has become quite thick. When we step outside, our eyes start to sting. The smell of the smoke is also quite strong,” said Darwin Romy, an indigenous Dayak living in Palangka Raya, the largest city in Central Kalimantan, in an interview with the BBC.
“The flames have already gotten close to residential areas… The problem is that water is starting to run dry here for firefighting,” Romy added.
Cross-Border Respiratory Distress in Malaysia
The wind-borne fallout respects no boundaries, carrying hazardous particulate pollution across the Malacca Strait and the South China Sea. At least nine areas across Sarawak recorded unhealthy API readings.

Back in West Kalimantan, municipal leaders are taking immediate precautions to protect students. The mayor of Pontianak, Edi Rusdi Kamtono, announced that students would transition to online learning for the duration of the haze event, noting that the smoke blankets the city heaviest during the late night and early morning hours.
Aerial Interventions and the Mount Bromo Toll
To combat the sprawling crisis, Indonesian disaster management teams have deployed cloud-seeding aircraft to induce artificial rainfall over critical hot spots. In provinces worst hit by the smoke, schools have suspended physical classes for three consecutive days.
Meanwhile, conservation officials have managed to extinguish a massive blaze that scorched roughly 550 to 900 hectares within the popular Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java after burning unchecked for nearly a week. Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, head of the park, noted that dry grassland, native vegetation, and protected edelweiss flowers fell victim to 36 distinct hot spots before crews brought the flames largely under control.
Active hot spots, however, stubbornly persist around tourist viewpoints and volcanic monitoring posts, keeping the volcanic conservation zone shuttered as ground crews battle to prevent dangerous flare-ups.
