He announced that he had launched an investigation into the possibility. He also pointed out that there were flaws in user age verification.
Italy is the first Western country to ban the use of chat GPT.
If OpenAI, which runs ChatGPT, does not take remedial action within 20 days, it could face a fine of up to 4% of its annual turnover.
Open AI could not be reached for comment.
As of the evening of the 31st, users in Italy are still able to access it.
A spokeswoman for the agency said it was notified of the decision on the morning of March 31 and that it was virtually impossible to block access that same day, but that it plans to do so by March 1.
ChatGPT is currently unavailable in mainland China, Hong Kong, Iran, Russia and parts of Africa. Open AI accounts cannot be created in these regions.
