ChatGPT Reaches One-Fifth of Google Search Volume
OpenAI’s chatbot is closing in on traditional web search dominance, with ChatGPT’s consumer product lead, Adam Fry, revealing to the Big Technology newsletter that its search-like query volume has hit roughly one-fifth of Google’s massive scale, Business Insider reported.
Basic information searching has cemented itself as the primary utility for AI chatbots. A Pew Research Center survey released this summer showed that 42% of American adults turn to AI specifically to search for information, making it the top use case for the technology ahead of workplace tasks at 38%.
ChatGPT remains the dominant player in the consumer chatbot space by a wide margin. Pew’s data shows 44% of surveyed American adults have used ChatGPT, compared to just 24% for Google’s Gemini. The platform now commands 1.2 billion weekly users, creating a formidable funnel of informational queries that once belonged exclusively to traditional search engines.
The Decline of Traditional Search Results
Google handles 5 trillion searches per year and has dominated the search market for two decades with immense profitability. Yet user frustration with the flagship product has mounted steadily over the years.
Search results grew increasingly cluttered with SEO-optimized links, making it difficult for users to find trustworthy information. The friction became so acute that users routinely appended the word “Reddit” to their queries to bypass commercial noise and find genuine human experiences.
ChatGPT is already 20% of Google's search volume. What will it be in one year? I bet MUCH higher.@Kantrowitz has the full OpenAI interview fire side chat here: https://t.co/SaqYQHWmoe https://t.co/FPcj8kCHlJ
OpenAI captured that exhaustion.
Hallucinations and the Cost of Convenience
AI models remain prone to hallucinations and erratic outputs, famously culminating in incidents like ChatGPT advising users to glue cheese to pizza during the model’s early turbulence in 2024.
Users have largely proven willing to accept occasional factual missteps in exchange for a conversational interface free of commercial clutter. That willingness highlights deep consumer dissatisfaction with the incumbent search experience rather than flawless execution by new market entrants.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai addressed the rise of conversational AI during an interview with Bloomberg’s Emily Chang, drawing parallels to past platform shifts. “You’ve had these chatbots scale up to hundreds of millions of users. We’ve grown in queries,” Pichai said at the time, arguing that the shift feels far from a zero-sum game much like the rise of TikTok ran parallel to YouTube’s continued growth.
Google Faces Mounting Pressure
Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the latest competitive metrics from OpenAI. The company previously recognized that it was in trouble, issuing a “code red” in 2022 over ChatGPT.
The latest metrics suggest that initial alarm was justified. Having enjoyed years of dominance with minimal meaningful competition, the incumbent search giant now faces a sustained challenge from a competitor actively siphoning away its core informational query volume.
