KIEV: Ten people have died in snowstorms in Ukraine, Interior Minister Ihor Klimenko said yesterday, as snow and storms battered the country since Sunday, knocking out power and blocking roads. Southern Ukraine was hardest hit, especially the Black Sea region of Odessa. Cars and buses skidded off the frozen roads into the fields and police fought hard to pull the vehicles out. He added that as a result of bad weather, 10 people died in Odesa, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv and Kyiv regions, and twenty-three people were injured, including two children. A total of 411 settlements in 11 regions lost power and more than 1,500 vehicles had to be rescued, Klymenko said. About 2,500 people trapped in the snow have been rescued, Odesa Region Governor Oleh Kiper said.
