Sri Lanka Stun England in Second-Highest ODI Chase Despite Harry Brook’s Record 202

England captain Harry Brook scored the fastest double-century in ODI history, hitting 202 from 116 balls to propel his side to 4-429 against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi on Thursday. Despite this record-breaking knock, Sri Lanka successfully chased the target to win by two wickets with one ball to spare, marking the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history.

Sri Lanka Complete Record Run Chase Against England

  • Harry Brook’s record-breaking innings highlights his multi-format value as Sri Lanka complete a historic run chase against England.
  • Pavan Rathnayake and Janith Liyanage play crucial roles as Sri Lanka complete a record-breaking run chase against England.

A Record-Breaking Masterclass That Went to Waste

Brook’s historic innings was initially characterized by a slow start, as he sat on just 13 runs from 24 deliveries before launching an explosive assault on the Sri Lankan attack. The 27-year-old captain surpassed Ben Stokes’ previous English record of 182 against New Zealand set in 2023. By bringing up his double-century from just 114 balls, Brook also broke Shubman Gill’s previous record of 117 balls for the fastest-ever ODI double hundred.

The milestone also places Brook alongside West Indies legend Chris Gayle as the only two players to record a Test triple-century, an ODI double-century, and a T20I century. Yet, Brook was left powerless as night fell and his bowlers failed to defend the massive total. “Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter now. I thought we were going to be in a good position but, unfortunately, it doesn’t even count,” Brook remarked after the match.

Sri Lanka’s response was nothing short of extraordinary, overcoming an early wobble at 24-2 to overhaul England’s 4-429. Pavan Rathnayake led the charge with a brilliant 130 from 106 deliveries, anchoring a 166-run partnership for the third wicket with Avishka Fernando, who contributed 97 runs. Dasun Shanaka also blasted 97 off a rapid-fire partnership to keep the scoreboard moving at a relentless pace.

Entering the closing stages, Janith Liyanage took control with an unbeaten 61 from just 27 balls. Needing eight runs from the final over bowled by Josh Tongue, Sri Lanka lost two wickets before Liyanage calmly dispatched a penultimate-ball six over long-off to seal the victory. The final total of 430-8 stands as the second-highest successful run chase in men’s ODI history, trailing only South Africa’s chase of 435 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.

Supportive Knocks Overshadowed by the Collapse

While Brook dominated the headlines, England’s innings featured strong contributions throughout the top and middle order. Joe Root chipped in with 69 runs from 66 balls, becoming the first England batter to complete 8,000 runs in his 197th one-day international. Will Jacks added an explosive 66 not out from 30 balls, while opener Tom Banton set the early tone with a well-constructed 50 off 51 deliveries.

England’s total of 4-429 represents the fourth-highest score in their ODI history, sitting behind their record 4-498 posted against the Netherlands in 2022. However, the inability of the bowling attack to defend a target exceeding 400 leaves England winless after two matches in the current tri-series, which also features Pakistan. Brook’s side now faces a quick turnaround ahead of their upcoming fixtures in the tournament.
