At the start of the year, an innovation marked the field of wireless charging: the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) unveiled the Qi2 standard (pronounced “ Chi 2 »).

Inspired by Apple’s MagSafe technology, this new standard promises to transform the way we charge mobile devices. Qi 2 (Qi2), pronounced “ chi 2 “, incorporates a “Magnetic Power Profile” (MPP), optimizing wireless charging through the use of magnets to perfectly align the charging coil of the smartphone with that of the charger. This advancement is not just about comfort; it also paves the way for improved charging speeds and greater compatibility between different devices.

From 15 to 30 Watts

The Qi2 standard comes in two distinct profiles. First, the magnetic power profile (MPP), directly inspired by Apple’s MagSafe technology and having contributed to the design of Qi 2. This profile allows charging speeds up to 15 Watts and offers a practical magnetic attachment. The second profile, an advanced version of the Extended Power Profile (EPP), forgoes the magnetic attachment, but doubles the charging speed, thus offering up to 30 W. This flexibility ensures that Qi 2 can meet the varied needs of users, whether they seek speed or convenience.

As you will have gathered, one of the greatest strengths of Qi 2 is its ability to adapt to a wide range of devices, both iOS and Android, including wireless accessories such as earphone cases and watches. According to the WPC press release, the iPhone 15 range would be among the first devices to benefit from this standard. Additionally, renowned accessory manufacturers like Belkin, Mophie, Anker and Aircharge are already in the testing phase of their Qi2 products. Smartphone manufacturers are also expected to massively adopt this technology in 2024.
