Tottenham Hotspur interim coach Christian Stellini described his team’s performance in the first 25 minutes during a 6-1 defeat by Newcastle United as perhaps the “worst” he had seen in his entire career.
Tottenham started the match with four players in the back line, but conceded five goals in the first 21 minutes, prompting coach Stellini to replace midfielder Pape Matar Sarr with defender Davinson Sanchez and return to the usual three defenders method.
“There are no words to describe such a performance,” Stellini told reporters. The first 25 minutes is probably the worst I’ve watched in my life.
He added, “I hope that the method we changed, in order to give us energy, was the wrong decision. If so it is my responsibility. We played with four players in the back and if that was the fault, it was my fault.
Newcastle advanced to third place with 59 points, six points behind Tottenham, fifth in the standings, who played an additional match and will host Manchester United on Thursday.
