The traffic shifts were initially scheduled to take effect on Friday, July 31, 2026. However, transportation officials postponed the changes until the following week after hearing concerns from local community members about how the road closures and detour would affect businesses in Galveston during the peak of summer.

As part of the revised schedule, the ramp that connects State Highway 146 westbound to I-45 southbound will close. Drivers who typically rely on that connection will instead cross I-45 and execute a U-turn near the intersection of I-45, SH 146, and State Highway 6 to head toward Galveston.
