Hong Kong’s competitive gaming sector is targeting broader growth following a strong medal haul at the Asian Games in Nagoya, alongside shifting public perceptions and an expanding talent pool, according to the Esports Association of Hong Kong.
Asian Games Medals Validate Competitive Growth
Competitive gaming has evolved into a major growth market across Asia over recent cycles, achieving official medal event status at the 2023 Asian Games before returning to the program in Japan. China has dominated proceedings across these tournaments, securing a total of seven gold medals across the two editions.
Hong Kong contributed to that regional footprint at the Nagoya Games by capturing bronze medals in Honor of Kings and the Fighting Games Team event. The latter category integrated three distinct tactical disciplines: Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, and The King of Fighters XV.
Shifting Perceptions and Mainstream Acceptance
Erik Yeung, founder of the Esports Association of Hong Kong, pointed to a combination of shifting public perceptions, international podium success, and a widening domestic talent pool as the primary catalysts capable of sustaining the city’s gaming industry expansion.
Esports has increasingly transitioned into a mainstream entertainment offering within the territory. This commercial appetite was highlighted when the city hosted its first M Mark esports tournament, Blast Premier Rivals Hong Kong, which completely sold out the arena at the AsiaWorld-Expo last November and drew a cumulative audience of more than 30,000 fans across three days.
