Volkswagen Group has purchased a second MetalFab 3D printing system from Additive Industries. With this, the car manufacturer will expand its AM activities. Volkswagen especially wants to move towards lights-out operations, 3D metal printing without the need for people to be present locally.
The German car group opened a 3D printing center in 2018 in which various AM systems are used to produce complex parts. Here is already a MetalFab from Additive Industries.

High degree of automation
So now a second system is added. Volkswagen has chosen this because of the high degree of automation of the Eindhoven system, elimination of manual processes and increased safety. Features such as automated production changeovers enable unmanned production. Additive Industries’ service and guidance were also crucial factors in the decision-making process. Mark Massey, Chief Executive Officer at Additive Industries says Additive Industries will support Volkswagen Group in expanding their additive manufacturing functions to take the next step in the automotive industry.
Modular construction
The car group continues to invest in parameter development and also installs the Powder Load Tool and Powder recovery Station for efficiency and waste reduction. Thanks to the modularity of the MetalFab system, Volkswagen can expand production capacity without major investments.
