What happens when you swallow chewing gum? A Russian doctor answers and reveals the fact that it sticks to the intestinal wall

Al-Marsad newspaper: The Russian doctor, “Sergey Fyalov”, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist, revealed what happens when you swallow chewing gum.

And the “specialist” said in an interview with Radio “Sputnik” that adults always advise young people not to swallow gum because it is not digested and may pose a danger to the body.

It is not recommended to swallow it

But the specialist does not agree with this warning, because chewing gum producers are taking this issue into account.

He says, “You can swallow the gum, but it is not recommended, because it was not produced for this purpose. In addition, all the chewing gum producers have taken the risk of swallowing the gum into account. That is, the gum should not cause any harm to human health if swallowed.”

Do not block the intestines

He adds, chewing gum cannot clog the intestines or stick to its walls.

“Most gum is neutral and inert,” he says. “It’s like a matrix with flavoring and fillers inside. When chewed, only the matrix remains, which doesn’t react with any other substance, passes quietly through the digestive system and is naturally excreted from the body.”

Excessive chewing gum

The specialist advises not to over-chew the gum, as it may cause some disorders in the digestive system.

He says, “In general, chewing gum is not always recommended, because it contains a high percentage of sorbitol (a sugar substitute) and other substances that “feed” the intestinal bacteria, leading to an increase in their numbers, which causes an increase in gas formation, flatulence and discomfort.
