A bat and a ball together cost 1.10 euros. The bat costs one euro more than the ball. How much does the ball cost? The question sounds simple – and is usually answered incorrectly: Even mathematics professors shoot out ten cents. But if you pause for a moment and do the math, you’ll soon come across the right answer: It’s five cents. Because at ten cents the racket would have to cost 1.10 euros. Then the total price would be 1.20 euros.
