In a recent report, Stiftung Warentest provides clear guidance on how to enhance your data privacy on WhatsApp. The standard settings on the app make your profile picture, last seen status, and even read receipts visible to everyone. Yet, with a few minor adjustments, users can easily secure their personal data.

Three Simple Steps to Better Data Protection

Improving your privacy on WhatsApp is straightforward and can be done in three easy steps:

Control Who Sees Your Profile Picture

To modify who can view your profile picture, follow these steps:

  • Open the app and go to “Settings.”
  • Click on “Account,” then “Data Protection.”
  • Under the “Profile Photo” option, you can select from “Everyone,” “My Contacts,” or “Nobody.”

Manage ‘Last Seen’ Visibility

The “last seen” setting determines when others can see your last online activity. Similar to the profile picture settings, adjust this under the “Data Protection” tab:

  • Select from “Everyone,” “My Contacts,” or “Nobody.”

Note: Disabling this feature will also prevent you from seeing others’ last seen statuses.

Disable Read Receipts

To avoid sending read receipts, follow these steps:

  • Go to “Settings,” then “Account,” and click on “Data Protection.”
  • Toggle off the “Read Receipts” setting.

Exception: Read receipts are always enabled in group chats.

Additional Tips for Enhanced Smartphone Security

Beyond WhatsApp settings, consider restricting access to other smartphone functions:

1. Navigate to your phone settings and select the “Apps” tab for WhatsApp.

2. Manage permissions to control access to photos, location, camera, and memory.

3. Determine what functionalities you are comfortable disabling.

Remember, exercising control over these settings helps to protect your privacy and maintain your security on the platform.
