Tonsil stones may come out on their own while coughing or brushing your teeth. Even if the stone is visible to the naked eye, it should not be removed arbitrarily with a cotton swab or tweezers. There are many blood vessels in the tonsillar mucosa and the mucous membrane itself is weak, so if you try to remove it arbitrarily, secondary infection may occur. If uncomfortable, stones can be removed with an aspirator at an otolaryngologist.

Q. If I have my tonsils removed, can I get tonsil stones?
Tonsil stones occur physiologically and naturally in the fissures in the tonsils, so even if they are well removed, they may recur after several days to weeks. If you want to completely avoid it, you can go to a tertiary hospital or a university hospital and get a total tonsillectomy. However, in some cases, total tonsillectomy cannot remove 100% of the tonsil tissue, and in this case, tonsil stones may recur as the remaining tonsil tissue grows.
