The driver who fatally mowed them down was under the influence of alcohol and five different drugs.
According to the latest information from the investigation, the two young women, from Kortrijk, were coming to the aid of someone who had been the victim of another accident when they were fatally hit by another vehicle on the night of October 8.
According to Italian media, Francesco Moretti, 53, the driver of the other vehicle involved was driving without a license and was well known to the police. He was driving under the influence of alcohol and traces of drugs were also found in his blood shortly after the incident. No less than five different drugs were revealed by the screening test: cocaine, cannabis, opiates, methadone and benzodiazepines.
After the accident, the man had tried to flee: “It was dark, I did not see them”, he had assured the investigators. Despite the effects of such a cocktail of drugs, it is “absolutely inconceivable that the suspect did not realize that he had hit the victims”, for her part assured the examining magistrate Maria Gaspari.
He confessed
Francesco Moretti is charged with the double fatal accident, with the aggravating circumstances of hit and run, driving under the influence of narcotics and driving without a valid driver’s license. Relatives of the victims were unaware that he had admitted the facts: “A few weeks ago, we learned by chance from a message in Italy that he had confessed to the facts”, explained Wibe’s mother to Laatste Nieuws. “For months, we were indignant because he kept denying the facts… But obviously, that has changed”.
And although he is still in prison, the suspect continues to make life difficult for the relatives of the victims. Because soon after the facts, a date had been set for a trial: September 26. Their lawyer had also advised them to reserve everything. But, recently, they learned that the date had been changed “at the request of the accused”. “For us, this is a change that is of great importance. It costs us 500 euros more. One has the impression who wants to continue to make us live the hell from his prison”.
The only reason for satisfaction, the date of the trial has been brought forward: “The sooner he is sentenced, the better it is”.
