It mightn’t be more official: FIFA and Electronic Arts are ending their historic partnership. After a series of disagreements between the two parties, the studio decides to separate from the federation to start a new era. FIFA is dead, long live EA Sports FC!

FIFA and EA: continuation and end of negotiations

Speculation was rife regarding the end of the partnership between Electronic Arts and FIFA. While the federation demanded from the studio nearly a billion eurosseveral rumors insistently evoked EA’s choice to permanently change the name of its flagship sports license. And while the name of EA Sports FC had already been mentioned, the American studio is now formalizing this change with a last-minute statement.

The information is therefore not new, but it is now completely official. This is a real historic change since the very first FIFA licensed game dates back to… 1993! Almost 29 years ago came out like this FIFA International Soccer and paved the way for all its congeners who have forever marked the genre of sports simulation. But if this partnership ends, does this decision imply drastic changes for the next games? In fact, not really.

EA SPORTS FC: big changes to come?

Whether the end of the partnership with FIFA will have an impact on the content of the future EA Sports FC, the studio is completely transparent as it stands: the answer is no! In the press release shared above, EA makes it clear to us that all the content and game modes already present in previous FIFAs will not change. In fact, the end of the partnership with FIFA ultimately has very little impact on the title of Electronic Arts according to them, except on the issue of branding. As EA explains, FIFA is also the result of nearly 300 partnerships within football, which ensures the presence of many official brands. The collaboration between the studio and the various European leagues still continues despite everything, and thus allows EA to retain a large part of the official licenses already used so far.

We also learn that the end of this collaboration will be effective from 2023. EA therefore retains the right to use the name for the 2023 opus, with additional content stamped World Cup. For its part, EA SPORTS FC has already been announced for the summer of 2023. To be seen, therefore, in concrete terms, the new features and changes planned for next year.
