Florence Pugh Stars in Netflix East of Eden Adaptation

Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 American classic East of Eden places Cathy Ames, played by Florence Pugh, at the very center of the narrative. Premiering on October 1, 2026, the seven-part series reimagines the notorious literary antihero with newly framed trauma and deeper psychological context.

John Steinbeck published his sweeping family saga East of Eden in 1952, cementing it as one of the most famous novels in American literature. The allegorical tale of Cain and Abel explores generational trauma, family legacies, and whether children are doomed to repeat the mistakes of their parents. In the novel, the character of Cathy Ames is introduced as an innately evil, satanic figure defined by her manipulation and cruelty. But Netflix’s ambitious miniseries shifts the perspective entirely, bringing the novel’s most notorious villain to the forefront as the central plot engine.

The adaptation is written by Zoe Kazan, who also serves as a showrunner. Florence Pugh takes on the lead role of Cathy, starring alongside Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask and Mike Faist as Adam’s brother, Charles. Pugh’s involvement goes beyond acting; she is an executive producer on the project and has spent years in discussions about bringing the story to the screen.

Florence Pugh and Zoe Kazan on Reimagining Cathy Ames

For Florence Pugh, stepping into the role of Cathy presented both a distinct artistic challenge and a heavy burden. Literature-themed content proved immensely popular for streaming audiences, with such titles pulling in billions of global views, but this specific retelling aims for a sharp psychological pivot. The creative team chose to strip away the simplistic villainy that marked the original text, opting instead to examine the formative experiences that shaped Cathy’s adult life.

To a monster, the norm must seem monstrous.

Rather than portraying Cathy’s early cruelties as proof of an unholy birth, the Netflix series reframes her backstory. Her father’s abuse is explicitly misogynistic, and an infamous early encounter with neighborhood boys is depicted as a traumatic sexual assault rather than a calculated setup. Zoe Kazan explained to the press that her own background informed her reading of those pivotal literary passages.

It is impossible for me, as a person who grew up in a body that was sexualized and targeted from my earliest memories, not to read that as maybe not what Steinbeck intended. Very late in the book, she describes her memories of being a child and being frightened and alone … What I saw was a portrait of disassociation, and I profoundly understood that.

Zoe Kazan, Showrunner and Writer

Kazan noted that Steinbeck’s own view of the character appeared to evolve as he wrote the novel, shifting from an initial desire to depict an absolute monster toward a recognition of human familiarity. Pugh echoed the sentiment that artistic interpretations must adapt across generations.

Every generation is going to have their version of what’s important in every book.

She added that Kazan’s writing allowed for there to be some understanding of why she is the way that she is without necessarily excusing her destructive behavior.

Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist on Moral Choice and Timshel

While Pugh’s Cathy drives the narrative engine, the supporting cast anchors the story’s philosophical inquiries. Christopher Abbott portrays Adam Trask, the passive counterweight to Cathy’s relentless drive. Abbott drew on past antihero roles, such as his work on Hulu’s Catch-22, to explore Adam’s internal motivations and background material that extended beyond the final scripts.

Mike Faist, who plays Charles Trask, pointed out that the core of Steinbeck’s text hinges on whether human beings are trapped by their ancestry or capable of personal reinvention. That central theme is articulated through the recurring philosophical concept of timshel—a Hebrew word discussed by the housekeeper Lee, adapted from a mistranslated passage in Genesis.

Every single day… any one of us wakes up; it is that question of which version of yourself are you going to lead with.

Directed by Garth Davis, the new adaptation makes Cathy a constant presence in every episode, recasting her not merely as an absent villain, but as the active catalyst who forces Adam to move to California and sets every subsequent family tragedy in motion.
