Wizards of the Coast celebrates 30th anniversary of Magic: The Gathering at Gen Con, reveals 2026 release slate

Wizards of the Coast (MTG), a division of Hasbro, celebrated the 30th anniversary of Magic: The Gathering at Gen Con, North America’s largest tabletop gaming convention, held in Indianapolis (USA). The company returned to the event – where many fans discovered Magic in 1993 – to celebrate 30 years of the trading card game alongside notable figures from the Magic universe, who hosted a panel for fans at Gen Con and gave them a Unprecedented look at future Magic: The Gathering releases through 2026.

Panelists at Gen Con were also the first to hear exciting details about upcoming entries in the Universes Beyond lineup, including Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s Jurassic World franchises, Assassin’s Creed, Fallout and Final Fantasy. The Universes Beyond line offers players fictional settings and characters from popular franchises combined with the strategic gameplay of MTG.

In collaboration with Bethesda Softworks, Wizards of the Coast will bring the iconic Fallout game franchise to Magic: The Gathering with ready-to-play Commander decks. Scheduled for release at GenCon in March 2024, Magic players and Fallout fans alike will be able to experience the post-nuclear, alternate-reality world of Fallout, complete with gangs of bloodthirsty marauders, towering super mutants, irradiated and futuristic retro deadly robots. These Commander decks will also bring the various Wasteland factions to Magic: The Gathering, allowing players to recreate some of Fallout’s most famous and surreal moments.

Additionally, Wizards of the Coast has given fans exciting updates about a collaboration with Square Enix®. Universes Beyond will carry over the beloved Final Fantasy series to Magic: The Gathering as a major booster release in 2025.

Known for its highly imaginative worlds, rich stories and memorable characters, Final Fantasy will bring that essence to MTG The set will span every major game ever released in the series, from the original Final Fantasy to the newly released Final Fantasy XVI. The set will also be available to play digitally in Magic: The Gathering Arena.

The conference not only covered exciting new partnerships and ways to enjoy the game, but explored the wild worlds of Magic’s own multiverse to be showcased through 2026.

Wildlands of Eldraine (release date: September 8)

The Wildlands of Eldraine marks the beginning of a new multi-year story in the Magic multiverse. The storybook-inspired setting will have players encounter characters inspired by those stories as they deal with the aftermath of the Phyrexian invasion.

Doctor Who (release date: 13 October 2023)

The next entry in the Universes Beyond series, Magic: The Gathering – Doctor Who, features four pre-built Commander decks spanning 60 years of the iconic franchise. They allow players to relive their favorite moments from the show and create their own special memories.

The decks were created to capture the fun and essence of Doctor Who’s iconic characters and memorable stories. The special treatment of the TARDIS’ Showcase frame and the exciting serialized Doctor cards featured in the Collector’s Boosters are the most attractive collectibles for die-hard Doctor Who fans.

Lost Caverns of Ixalan (release date: Q4 2023)

After exploring the wild lands of Eldraine, players will head back to Ixalan—where dinosaurs roam—in Lost Caverns of Ixalan. This collection includes a thematically appropriate collaboration with the successful Jurassic World franchise—which also celebrates its 30th anniversary this year—with cards featuring new illustrations that highlight iconic characters and scenes from all six films in the Jurassic World franchise.

Ravnica Remastered (release date: Q1 2024)

In 2024, Wizards of the Coast will release a remastered set of Ravnica cards, a plan that originally debuted in the MTG multiverse in 2005. Ravnica Remastered includes everything fans love about the original Ravnica sets, such as a strong focus on guilds , and will include cards from every Ravnica block.

Murder at Karlov Manor (release date: Q1 2024)

In Murder at Karlov Manor, players will experience Ravnica through the eyes of its sharpest detectives. As a new take on Ravnica, Murder at Karlov Manor is Magic’s take on the detective genre, with clues, secrets, hidden identities, and mysteries to unravel. It’s an innovative “who done it” riddle, and fans will need to use their detective skills to solve the puzzle and escape.

Ravnica: Clue Edition (release date: Q1 2024) revealed at GenCon

Ravnica: Clue Edition combines the timeless, immersive crime-solving experience of Clue with the strategic depth of Magic, all within the Ravnica setting. Ravnica: Clue Edition is both a standalone experience and a full game that welcomes fans of both Magic and Clue to unleash their inner sleuths and solve mysteries on Ravnica.

Commander Fallout Decks for Magic: The Gathering (Release Date: March 2024)

In collaboration with Bethesda Softworks, Universes Beyond will bring the iconic Fallout game franchise to Magic: The Gathering with ready-to-play Fallout-themed Commander decks.

The Outlaws at Thunder’s Crossroads (release date: Q2 2024)

In 2024, Magic: The Gathering will take players into a new world with The Outlaws at Thunder’s Crossroads. Featuring some of Magic’s most notorious villains, The Outlaws at Thunder’s Crossroads is an action-packed frontier fantasy that reimagines the western genre.

Assassin’s Creed (release date: July 2024)

In collaboration with Ubisoft, Universes Beyond will feature epic and immersive Assassin’s Creed historical adventures in Magic: The Gathering. The Assassin’s Creed Collection will include every Assassin’s Creed game released to date, with cards featuring unique mechanics and reprints with new illustrations.

Modern Horizons 3 (release date: 2024) preview given at GenCon

Modern Horizons returns in 2024 with Modern Horizons 3. With its rewarding draft format and nostalgic references, this collection is sure to please MTG players who can expect all that and more. Another highlight are popular characters, including some double-faced cards – and Planeswalkers.

Bloomburrow (release date: Q3 2024)

In 2024, Magic fans will still be able to venture into Bloomburrow, a cute new Magic world that doesn’t include humans, but a daring adventurous group of anthropomorphic animal friends (like squirrels, frogs, mice, and rabbits) that will need to band together to an important mission.

Duskmourn: House of Horror (release date: Q4 2024)

Set for release in late 2024, Duskmourn: House of Horror takes place inside a haunted mansion and is inspired by horror films, games and media from the 1980s.

Shadows on Innistrad Remastered (release date: 2025)

Shadows on Innistrad Remastered is another chapter in the Remastered series. The set will have everything Magic fans love about Innistrad’s gothic horror setting in a curated, draftable set.

Final Fantasy (release date: 2025)

The beloved Final Fantasy series comes to Magic: The Gathering as a major booster release in 2025. The set will encompass every major game ever released in the game franchise, from the original Final Fantasy to the recent Final Fantasy XVI. The set will also be available to play digitally in Magic: The Gathering Arena.

Codename: *Tennis (release date: Q1 2025) date scheduled at GenCon

In 2025, the set currently referred to by the codename “Tennis” explores the racing genre, but with the face of Magic. This set is being shaped to be Magic’s first multiplanar death race across three different worlds.

Codename: *Ultimate (release date: 2025)

Powerful dragons dominate the set codenamed “Ultimate,” which will be a return to Tarkir’s beloved plane.

Codename: *Volleyball (release date: 2025)

Set for release in the latter half of 2025, the set currently codenamed “Volleyball” will be set in space and transport players into a sci-fi space opera.

Codename: *Wrestling (release date: 2025)

Magic fans love Lorwyn’s plane for its goblins, kithkin, fairies, and elves. Magic: The Gathering will return to Lorwyn with the set codenamed “Wrestling”, slated for release in 2025.

Codename: *Yachting (release date: 2026) preview given at GenCon

Currently codenamed “Yachting,” this set will be a return to Strixhaven in Arcavios, one of the plans recently introduced to Magic. It features students, faculty, and everything else you’d expect from a magical college.

Codename: *Ziplining (release date: 2026)

In the set code-named “Ziplining,” due out in 2026, Magic fans can expect an epic conclusion to a multi-year narrative – similar to War of the Spark or March of the Machine.

Commander Secret Lair’s new deck was discussed at Gen Con

The Secret Lair de Magic team is always pushing boundaries and exploring new territories. The new 100-card Commander deck, Angels: They’re Just Like Us but Cooler and with Wings, features cards with never-before-seen artwork, cards released for the first time in foil, and a mechanically unique card that has only been seen in the Magic video game: The Gathering from 2001. This is a limited-edition product, available while supplies last, and will be on sale in the US market for $149.99, beginning August 10 at 9:00 AM PST.
