Gyeongbokgung High School in Seoul has launched an investigation to find a student from Gyeongbok High School who posted sexual harassment on social networking services (SNS) as a member of the female group Espa.

An official from Gyeongbo High School called the reporter on the 4th and said, “We found a student who posted inappropriate comments about Espa, and the student admitted his mistake. We are investigating the circumstances of the posting,” he said. Gyeongbo High School found another person who posted a controversial post on social media, but said that since he was a graduate, he could not take disciplinary action at the school level. Gyeongbo High School is investigating whether there are other current students who have posted problematic posts on SNS, such as by receiving reports.

SM Entertainment’s SPA held a concert at the Gyeongbo High School Festival site in Jongno-gu, Seoul to celebrate the 101st anniversary of the school on the 2nd. After the performance, several posts were posted on social media with pictures of Espa members and phrases such as ‘Sex X’ and ‘I did everything except touching’. On the same day, there was also an article saying that they were selling SPA fan cams (videos taken by fans themselves).

Gyeongbo High School issued its first apology on the day of the performance, but criticized it as ‘blaming others’ without properly checking it. In his second apology, he said, “Some students were not mature enough to watch the performance, and after the event, they posted photos and articles on social media, which seems to have caused a stir.” The Seoul Office of Education plans to check whether gender-sensitive education in the school has been properly conducted after receiving a report on the results of the investigation into sexual harassment at Gyeongbo High School.

The practice of SM singers performing in support of Gyeongbo High School has also been on the rise because it is the alma mater of SM founder Lee Soo-man and general producer Lee Soo-man. In the meantime, SHINee, f(x), EXO-K, Girls’ Generation TaeTiSeo, Red Velvet, NCT Dream, etc. attended the Gyeongbogo event.

Da-hye Jang, a research fellow at the Korea Institute for Criminal Justice Policy, said, “(The fact that several people posted the problem on SNS) shows the ‘peer culture’ that sexually objectifies women in a distorted way. It should be clearly pointed out that posting sexually harassing posts on the Internet is violence and illegal.”
