Lens implantation is a method of inserting a lens into the eye without opening or cutting the cornea. Because it can safely correct even high astigmatism with a large amount of corneal ablation or ultra-high myopia, it is a surgery that is often sought by patients with ultra-high myopia and high astigmatism over -8 diopters. In addition, patients who were not suitable for conventional laser vision correction due to corneal abnormalities can be corrected sufficiently with lens implantation, so many patients who have given up vision correction due to corneal abnormalities are also looking for them.

Lens implantation can change the quality of visual acuity even with a very small error, so a precise optometry consultation is conducted with the medical staff to determine the vision correction surgery suitable for the individual.

Safer surgery is possible only when the eyeball is structurally grasped using advanced 3D equipment before surgery, and the type of lens suitable for the individual and the correct insertion position are determined before surgery is performed. At this time, a more precise inspection is performed by repeating and cross-checking through the inspection equipment (CIRRUS 6000 OCT).

After the size and location of the lens are determined, a very small incision of about 3 mm is made after anesthesia, the lens is inserted anteriorly or posteriorly, and the lens is fixed between the iris and the lens to complete the surgery.

Lens implantation is largely divided into an anterior lens and a posterior lens depending on the location of the lens insertion. Among them, in the case of posterior lens implantation, which is the most recent, the lens is not fixed to the iris, so the rich surgical experience of the medical staff is particularly important. In particular, in the case of astigmatism correction, even if the lens deviates from the axis of astigmatism by only 1 degree, the effect of correcting the vision is reduced, so the possibility of lens rotation must be considered before surgery to increase the success rate of astigmatism correction.

Callisto Eye, a scanning device, is an astigmatism device. Through the overlay device built into the operating microscope, it minimizes the margin of error by providing the surgeon with the optimal value for the location and degree of anterior capsular incision during lens implantation. It is suitable for precise anterior capsular incision and correction of astigmatism, improving the quality of vision during lens implantation. In lens implantation, even a very small difference of 1 μm changes the result of surgery, so not only precise examination but also the surgical experience and know-how of the medical staff are very important. Therefore, when selecting a hospital for lens implantation, side effects can be prevented by carefully examining the medical staff’s career, academic activities, number of surgeries, and whether or not they have an astigmatism correction surgery method optimized for high astigmatism before proceeding with the procedure.

The great advantage of lens implantation is that vision can be corrected regardless of the condition of the cornea, and dry eye syndrome and light smearing are minimized due to the small incision window. However, as lens implantation is a surgical operation, it is necessary to insert the lens and adjust its position appropriately, so the experience and skill of the surgeon account for the largest part in the surgical result.
