The Director-General of the Lebanese General Security, Major General Abbas Ibrahim, concluded his duties yesterday after 12 years in office, and the attempts of his allies, especially in the “Amal” movement and “Hezbollah”, failed to extend him after he reached the legal retirement age (64 years).

Yesterday, Ibrahim did not hide his desire to take over the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which some considered as a “consolation” for his non-renewal, and as a reward for the efforts he made during the negotiations he made during the stage of kidnappings and hostage-taking in Syria, in addition to his activity on the line of communication between the Lebanese leaders.

Major General Ibrahim was known for his strong international relations, which prompted him to say yesterday, at a ceremony honoring him at the Public Security Directorate, that the ministerial portfolio he would like to take on is the foreign ministry, and he also pledged to pursue political work. Political differences prevented Ibrahim from being extended, despite a promise from the head of the Free Patriotic Movement, Representative Gebran Bassil, and two law proposals prepared by Assistant President Nabih Berri, Representative Ali Hassan Khalil, to find a formula that would keep him at the head of the Public Security Directorate.
