No Man’s Sky Celebrates 10th Anniversary with New ‘Cosmos’ Update Announcement

Marking a decade of continuous development, Hello Games is celebrating the tenth anniversary of No Man’s Sky by reflecting on its redemption arc and teasing its next major software release, titled Cosmos. Founder Sean Murray shared an emotional retrospective highlighting the universe, while Beebom reports that players have explored 1% of the planets the game has to offer.

A Decade of Procedural Redemption

Back in August 2016, No Man’s Sky launched to immense hype followed by a feeling that the game was empty and unfinished. Hello Games has since conducted the biggest redemption campaign for a game ever. According to Hello Games, the indie project transformed through dozens of updates. These patches introduced new biomes, creatures, spaceships, minerals, ways to travel and play (alone or with friends), interactions with aliens, a system for building bases and management of star fleets.

Instead of abandoning the project, the studio expanded the game. This steady stream of work turned the release into a space epic.

The Announcement of Cosmos

To mark the ten-year milestone, founder Sean Murray released an open letter detailing his thoughts on the journey. As reported by Beebom, Murray wrote, “I feel surprisingly emotional today. Ten years ago, travellers across the universe set foot on their first alien planet in No Man’s Sky. It’s very cool to me that all around the universe, other Travellers have woken up on countless other planets, light years apart from each other.”

Alongside this reflection, Hello Games published a collection of the journey from that day until today and a special video offering a glimpse of the upcoming Cosmos update. While a concrete deployment date remains unconfirmed for 2026, Beebom reports that the title might imply that players will venture further into the mysteries of space.

Infinite Horizons and the One Percent Metric

Despite ten years of play involving millions of players, Beebom reports that the No Man’s Sky community has only explored 1% of the planets the game has to offer. This underscores why Hello Games continues supporting the game.

The studio maintains a plan not only for Cosmos, but also beyond that. This ensures that the game will continue receiving content, keeping the ecosystem active for the foreseeable future.
