A 55-year-old Lower Austrian who drove to Rust in the afternoon to ice skate at the lake has not returned home since then, the Burgenland State Police Directorate confirmed on Tuesday in response to an APA request to media reports. The search operation initiated has so far been unsuccessful.
Police and fire departments were on duty on Tuesday with a helicopter and drones. The search was temporarily interrupted overnight and continued on Tuesday morning. Although Lake Neusiedl is currently frozen over, it is not officially open for ice skating because the ice layer is too thin in places.
