Seasons 1 to 3 of The Rookie have been available to stream on Netflix since March and season 4 has finally been available since July 1st. The cop series is hugely popular, but Season 4’s opener holds a huge disappointment: a popular main character is dumped from the show in the worst way imaginable.

The Rookie Season 4 on Netflix: The Senseless Character Death was a stopgap because the actor didn’t return
Sometimes writers have to get creative because stars don’t want to return to shows like Charlie Sheen did in Two and a Half Men. The season 4 opener of The Rookie led to the most disappointing moment of the entire series: main character Jackson West (Titus Makin Jr. ), since the first episode in the main cast, is silently killed from the series.
Nobody expects Jackson to die at the start of Season 4. And how he’s written out of the series is just bizarre. Since Titus Makin Jr. did not want to shoot another scene for unspecified reasons, only his double is shown in a scene from behind in the Season 4 opener – and shot.
How Jackson West dies in The Rookie: At the end of Season 3, Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) is kidnapped at her wedding. Only at the beginning of Season 4 do we learn that Jackson West is also a kidnapping victim. But we only see a video recording in which he is supposed to get into a car. Because he fights back, he is shot and put in the trunk. That’s it.

In an interview with TVLine showrunner Alexi Hawley explains the emergency solution:
What I can say is that Titus didn’t return to the show, so we had to find the best possible solution to do justice to this character who was so important to the show from the start.
Titus Makin Jr. wanting to leave the show altogether didn’t come as a huge surprise. That’s why it’s all the more disappointing that no sensible ending was found.
The Jackson actor discovered flaws in the series during Season 2. He therefore wished the showrunner that the series dealt more with racism within the police force, reports Entertainment Weekly . Season 3 then attempted to address the issue with the character of Doug Stanton, Jackson West’s new and racist boss.
