BM Polaschek: Thanks to its success with ERC grants, Austria is proving itself to be an excellent research location in a European and international comparison.

Vienna (OTS) The European Research Council (ERC) has announced the results of the latest ERC Synergy Grant call. Three of the prestigious grants go to teams involving researchers from Austrian research institutions: Elly Tanaka from the Research Institute for Molecular Pathology, who will also act as spokesperson for the group, together with ETH Zurich and the Max Planck Society; Gasper Tkacik from ISTA together with the Institut Pasteur and the College de France; and Borayin Larios from the Institute for South Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist Studies at the University of Vienna together with the University of Tübingen and Brown University in the USA. These groups will work with scientists across national borders over the next few years. A total funding volume of around 28 million euros is available to them for this purpose.

Martin Polaschek, Federal Minister of Education, Science and Research, congratulates the award-winning grantees and their research groups on their funding: “The ongoing success of the ERC grants, not least reflected in the record number of 19 starting grants acquired this year in September, shows that Austria also proves to be an excellent research location in European and international comparison. The special feature of the Synergy Grants is the cross-country and cross-disciplinary cooperation of researchers who combine their expertise, skills and resources to expand the boundaries of our knowledge. I am therefore particularly excited regarding the future-oriented findings that the research teams will surprise us with in the coming years. I warmly congratulate the three top researchers and their teams on their great achievement.”

This year, the best 37 research groups were selected from 395 applications for the top-class funding, which corresponds to a success rate of around 9%. The successful projects (total funding amount of 395 million euros) involve 135 top researchers who will conduct research at 114 universities and non-university research institutions in 19 countries within and outside the European Union.

With the open-topic Synergy Grant, the ERC supports groups of at least 2 and a maximum of 4 principal investigators and their teams who work together to address challenging and interdisciplinary scientific questions. The research groups are provided with a maximum funding amount of 10 million euros for a period of up to 6 years.

If you are interested in the various ERC calls for proposals, the FFG, as the national contact point, offers a wide range of support, which, in addition to information events and training on submitting applications, also includes feedback on project applications and interview training.
