The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution creating a select subcommittee to investigate whether components of the federal government have been weaponized against private citizens.

House lawmakers passed a resolution establishing the Special Judiciary Committee in a vote of 221-211, along party lines.
House Majority Leader Steve Scales said in a statement on the committee: “Congress has not kept pace with the federal government’s ability to misuse new technology, and we need to better understand how US intelligence agencies work with each other and with the private sector to collect information on Americans or to undermine them.” their basic constitutional rights.
The subcommittee will investigate how the FBI, Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security and other executive branch agencies obtain and provide information to the private sector and other agencies to facilitate actions against US citizens.
The committee will be given access to information shared with the House Intelligence Committee and authority to review ongoing criminal investigations. The commission is named after the 1975 Church Commission, which conducted similar oversight of federal agencies.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy will appoint 13 members to the subcommittee, including five Democrats, in consultation with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
