Massive Russian Night Attack Hits Multiple Ukrainian Regions and Kherson

A massive, coordinated Russian aerial assault struck multiple Ukrainian cities early Friday morning, utilizing a complex mix of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and hundreds of strike drones to overwhelm regional air defenses.

The Ukrainian Air Force and monitoring services tracked the assault as it unfolded across the country. According to 24tv.ua, the offensive began at 04:51 a.m. on October 17, following a barrage that initially saw the launch of sea-based Kalibr cruise missiles tracked over the temporarily occupied Kherson region at 04:34 a.m. In an operational update released around 8:00 a.m., the Air Force detailed that Russian forces had fired Iskander-M and KN-23 ballistic missiles, Kh-22/32 cruise missiles, four Kalibr missiles, and 332 attack drones—including 31 jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles—starting from 6:00 p.m. the previous evening. Ukrainian air defense forces intercepted or suppressed four Kalibr missiles and 289 drones of various types.

Deadly Airstrikes Devastate Kherson’s Residential Zones

The most severe human toll came in Kherson, where the Korabelny district absorbed repeated aerial strikes. NV reported that Russian forces dropped eight guided aerial bombs on residential blocks and social infrastructure over the course of an hour. A secondary strike hit the area after emergency medical teams had already arrived at the scene. Korrespondent.net noted that a 64-year-old emergency medical service ambulance driver was killed instantly by the blast.

According to local officials cited by Hromadske, approximately 15 people sustained injuries in the southern city, including an 11-year-old girl, a family with a one-month-old infant, paramedics, and nurses suffering from blast injuries, shrapnel wounds, and severe concussions. Emergency rescue units pulled seven survivors directly from the rubble of ten heavily damaged multi-story apartment buildings, as reported by NV.

Infrastructure and Industrial Targets Hit in Zaporizhzhia and Kryvyi Rih

Simultaneously, the central and eastern regions faced heavy ballistic targeting. Zaporizhzhia suffered direct impacts on residential neighborhoods shortly after a ballistic missile warning sounded at 04:37 a.m. The Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration confirmed that the strikes damaged local residential buildings, igniting vehicle fires and injuring five people, including an 11-year-old girl, as detailed by Hromadske.

Further west, Kryvyi Rih weathered a combination of cruise and ballistic missiles launched from eastern and southern vectors. According to the Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration via 24tv.ua, the assault struck a major local industrial enterprise. Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the city’s Defense Council, confirmed the attack at 04:44 a.m., while local authorities continued verifying casualty numbers amid the industrial damage.

Power Outages and Structural Damage Across Vinnytsia, Rivne, and Zhytomyr

The sheer scale of the drone barrage caused widespread disruptions to civic infrastructure in central and northern Ukraine. In Vinnytsia, Mayor Serhiy Morgunov announced that the municipal electrical grid failed entirely following the bombardment. Critical infrastructure switched immediately to backup generators, while municipal authorities halted electric transit networks, replacing trams and trolleybuses with supplementary buses and shuttle vans. The strike followed a preceding drone raid on Vinnytsia that had already injured six civilians, including a 25-year-old woman in critical condition.

Industrial and energy assets also absorbed direct hits in Rivne and Zhytomyr oblasts. State Emergency Service teams in Rivne extinguished a substantial fire that erupted at a local manufacturing facility, leaving two workers injured.

Air defense units actively engaged incoming threats over the capital of Kyiv, where the Kyiv City Military Administration declared a red alert status at 04:33 a.m. as waves of drones traversed central airspace, accompanied by explosions reported near Kharkiv.
