The amount that will be invested in road repairs this year has been announced

The most large-scale work will take place on regional highways with a length of 220 kilometers and republican local roads with a length of 159 kilometers. Work on the country’s main highways will affect 71 kilometers.

The emphasis on national roads of local and regional importance can be explained by the funding structure – this year another 3 million euros have been allocated from the state budget to ensure local mobility and implement a program for connecting rural municipality centers, explains LVC. At the same time, a significant part of the investments in the country’s regional roads is carried out within the framework of administrative and territorial reform.

Of the 450 kilometers of national roads that will be repaired this year, 193 kilometers will be covered with asphalt concrete, 123 kilometers will be rebuilt, and 67 kilometers of gravel roads will be resurfaced in two layers. A total of 24 kilometers of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure will be built. Five bridges will be restored, seven more will be demolished and rebuilt.

The largest construction projects this season will be the section of the Vidzeme highway from Melturi to Berzkrogs, where the reconstruction started last year will be completed. The work that started last summer will continue on the Rie ring road in Babite. In both areas, motorists will have to reckon with traffic restrictions this year.

On regional highways, the largest works are planned in Kurzeme – on the Ventspils-Dundaga highway from Ventspils to Auce, in Vidzeme – on the Smiltene-Valka highway from Smiltene to the turn to Meri. At the same time, a new bridge over the Salaca will be built in Salacgriva this year.

To improve traffic safety, two traffic intersections will be reconstructed. The intersections of the Inciems-Sigulda-Kegums and Riga-Ergli motorways in Suntaži, Ogre region will be converted into a roundabout.

Meanwhile, on the section of the Vidzeme highway from the border of Riga to Garkalne, changes in the organization of traffic are planned this year. Throughout the phase, the plan is to create a new, “better driver-readable turn signal system,” as well as close some turning points. It is planned to reduce the number of left-hand maneuvers on the Riga ring road in the Langstini area.

Currently, construction work has begun on seven sections of roads of national importance, as well as on three bridges. Due to repair work, the greatest traffic restrictions are currently in effect on the Ventspils-Kolka regional roads near Ventspils, on the Kandava-Saldus road section from Zante to Zemite and on the Smiltene-Valka road near Smiltene.
